creative challenge – Day 4
FEP ( = Flying Elephant Project)
Day 4 – Thursday September 12th 2013
Today, go “ab·stract “ = expressing a quality or characteristic apart from any specific object or instance, thought of apart from concrete realities, specific objects, or actual instances, Fine Arts of or pertaining to the formal aspect of art, emphasizing lines, colors, generalized or geometrical forms, etc., especially with reference to their relationship to one another.
As we already did in yesterdays challenge, we will challenge our mind today with something which we are not so used to think or do normally – it is about challenging yourself, go out of your comfort zone…
a.Challenge for your mind:
Today I would like to share a video (TED talk about 11min.) of a young Indian artist.
Why I choose this today – I think it is fascinating on how different his work went in such a short time of his life. His work is very inspirational.
b. challenge to practice:
create an abstract sketch of a dog, this is just a warm up, do not think to much. Start be sketching one eye, turn your sketch 90° degree clockwise, sketch the second eye, turn again 90° sketch a nose, turn 90° sketch one ear, turn second ear, turn sketch the leg, and so on…
c. challenge to getting lost in time:
start a new abstract piece or continue to work on something you did before…
Heike: my first dog…
Judy: Here is my challenge with the dog drawing. I found some newsprint in the kids art supplies and started using crayons and old markers to color it. Not done and a poor image quality as my daughter sent it to me via texting. But, the point is, I had a lot of fun doing this and it made me think about a new way to do abstractions. Certainly not a work I would share with anyone but my Challenge Buddies.
Peggy: Difficult exercises! The dog is so silly!!!! Loved the Ted talk! I learned more about watercolor today, at the end. Much better to stand up to see the contrast and know what to do. Next time I will do that. Watercolor is daunting, but I tried, and learned. MUCH MORE TO LEARN!!!!. Not sure what I learned about the dog….Hope all had a fun day today
Gail: one of my ArtRage Paintings: cosas de tiempos. Not sure what to say about this one. Not really an abstract. More a collage in time and space.
Sandy: here is my abstract piece/getting lost in time …from yesterday and today- something I have been working out/coming back too- don’t feel it is quite finished….
Judy: I am not sure how my challenge fits in for today other than I worked more on being more abstract. While on the plane flying home, I found a drawing that my grandson had started in ArtRage on my iPad. I decided to collaborate with him and add to it. This lady emerged from the central scribbles and I grew to love her. She is now an idea for a finished piece. She is titled She Carries Baggage.

I think that this video was one of the biggest inspirations of all the input Heike provided us. It really helped me to free up and not be afraid to take on a new direction with my art if that is what I am led to. Interesting that we would have some challenges to create in the abstract, as that has been a personal challenge of mine for some time now. The one thing that all of our images seem to reflect is Freedom. I like that.
